Scientist - Protein Analytics

Permanent employee, Full-time · Berlin

What we do

Today, materials production accounts for 23% of GHG emissions and shows no sign of slowing down. Cambrium was founded under the belief that biology offers a better way. For material innovation in nature, biology turns to proteins. Over the past 4.3 billion years evolution has shaped proteins with every material property imaginable. From surfactants and hard surfaces, to gels and foams, to coatings and adhesives. We built our platform to speed up biology’s innovation cycle to make the materials the world needs in a timeline that matters. By programming proteins at scale, we create sustainable breakthrough materials for innovators across cosmetics, fashion and packaging.

We are an equal-opportunity employer and value diversity. We consider all applications equally regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, or gender identity. We strongly encourage individuals from groups traditionally underrepresented in tech to apply, and we can help with immigration.

We are seeking a Scientist - Protein Analytics to lead efforts in optimizing, operating, and expanding our protein analytics platform. As the primary specialist on protein analysis and characterization, you will apply a range of advanced analytical methods to drive innovation. Working within a dynamic, interdisciplinary team, you will collaborate across diverse scientific fields to push the boundaries of bio-based material generation.

Your Responsibilities

  • Own, define and conduct protein quantification and characterization through diverse analytical methods such as liquid chromatography, across both wet- and dry-lab settings.

  • Develop and onboard new methods and assays for high-throughput quantification and characterization of proteins.

  • Expand and correlate protein quantification assays across different testing scales.

  • Validate, enhance, and perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) workflows for large-scale manufacturing.

  • Support and execute downstream processing (DSP) workflows, including protein purification.

  • Drive design-build-test-learn cycles by contributing to computational pipeline development.

  • Collect, analyze, and present data systematically to teams with varied scientific expertise and to external stakeholders.

  • Actively contribute to shaping the scientific and technical vision of the venture, working within a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and entrepreneurial team.

Your profile
  • Ph.D. (preferred) or Master’s degree in protein biochemistry, analytical chemistry, bioengineering, or a related field with a minimum of 2 years of industry experience or equivalent experience with industrial projects is required.

  • In-depth expertise in protein analysis with chromatographic methods such as HPLC

  • In-depth expertise in handling and understanding the biochemical properties of proteins

  • Experience with protein overexpression systems, preferably yeast (P. pastoris)

  • Experience with protein purification and characterization in high throughput systems is a plus

  • Experience with fermentation is a plus

  • Experience in automated labs is a plus

  • Enthusiasm for synthetic biology and new materials
